Biography and Work Statement

The mind can be like a river, which often has fragments and material flowing through it reflecting the life that we lead. I want my paintings to have fluidity and flow. Momentary visions, thoughts, memories and imaginations coalesce into a whirlwind of fragments held together by an overriding sense of euphoria. My paintings often provide a simple structure from a distance yet as you move closer to them, smaller images and details emerge. Similarly, my sculptures often contain discoveries and small toys. Items reveal themselves, often held together by glue and paint. These symbols/items in my painting and sculpture do not add up to a story, they are mind wanderings, a collection of flowing thoughts floating across the surfaces, and poetic interactions. I see international engagement and transcultural interaction as a vital part of today’s discourse.

About the work

The large older paintings were made on my return to the UK from a Wingate Travel Scholarship in 1990 around South East Asia including Thailand Burma Laos Cambodia and Vietnam I made drawings while travelling made in Situ titled Drawing of View of Saigon from the Golden Mount.

The sculpture is made generally from discarded items and the large one in Sharjah was commissioned last year and is an example of how I enjoy making them in a particularly place. I have made them in Rome, UAE, Japan, Thailand and of course London.
